Northeastern Ontario Hospital Workers Rally For Fair Contract

Workers from Notre-Dame Hospital in Hearst joined others from across Northeastern Ontario in demonstration today.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees’ Ontario Council of Hospital Unions President Michael Hurley says the rally around noon was the second in the past month in response to 75,000 hospital workers in Ontario currently being without a contract.

Hurley says other hospitals in Timiskaming, Chapleau, Sudbury and North Bay all joined during the rally.

He says CUPE, SEIU Healthcare and Unifor have created an alliance to fight for hospital workers seeking a fair contract without compromise.

Hurley says workloads for staff are difficult, and hospitals refuse to extend wage increases voluntarily.

Last Wednesday hospital staff across Ontario wore a small sticker saying Together for Respect to show solidarity.

Hurley says the union is optimistic that this weekend a new and fair deal can be reached.
