OPP And MNRF Warn You To Be Bear Wise

As the weather becomes warmer, bears are making their way out of hibernation.

That’s according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and the OPP, both say this is the time of year to watch out for bears.

Media Officer Stephanie Belec says in order to prevent bears in your area you should follow these steps:

  • keep all pet food indoors
  • store garbage in containers with lids
  • put garbage out only the morning of pickup
  • clean all food residue and grease from outdoor barbecues after use.

Belec says bears that enter the community are not necessarily a threat but they should be reported.

She says to report a non-emergency call the toll-free Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327, in any emergency scenario she says contact 911 or your local police.
