OPP Warns Community To Be Aware Of The Emergency Scam

The OPP would like you to verify who you are dealing with before ever sending money to anyone for any reason.

The James Bay Detachments of the OPP as part of the annual Fraud Prevention Month awareness campaign want to make community members in Kapuskasing more aware of the Emergency Scam.

Media Officer Stephanie Belec says a frantic phone call from someone claiming to be a grandchild or loved one will take place.

Belec says during the call, they will ask for money or gift cards and stress they need it immediately.

She says in order to alert yourself of possible fraud, make sure you are aware of the four signs; Urgency, Fear, Secrecy and Requesting Money or Gift Cards.

Belec says any possible victims of scams should call your local police or Crime Stoppers.
