Hughes: Canada 150 Rink Funding Could Have Been Better Spent

One Northern MP is letting the federal government hear her displeasure over what she says was an $8.1 million mistake.

Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP Carol Hughes is referring to a Canada 150 skating rink on Parliament Hill, which cost the country $5.6 million through its original time frame of December, and an extra $2.5 million to keep open through the end of February.

Hughes says there could have been so many improvements made to people’s lives with this money.

She says First Nations communities within her region would have used this money for much more important improvements.

Heritage Minister Melanie Joly’s press secretary Simon Ross said back in late January the rink will be donated to a community in need.
