The push for returning passenger rail service to Northern Ontario is underway and one MP says it is growing.
Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing NDP MP Carol Hughes has continued to deliver petitions to parliament in order to show government the level of support for passenger rail service is still strong.
Hughes says she receives signed petitions daily from supporters all over the province asking for help in bringing back passenger rail service.
She says since the service has not been running, communities in the north have been dealing with substantial hardships, such as a loss of employment and lack of reliable transportation.
Hughes says the loss has been felt by everyone, therefore they are asking the Minister of Transportation to return passenger rail service in the north.
Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca announced back in early December an increase to bus service within the Northeast through a $5.2 million investment.
However, Del Duca has not yet commented on the return of passenger rail service to Northern Ontario.
The current Liberal provincial government last claimed in late January that they are developing a draft strategy to provide different forms of transportation in the north.
