DSB ONE Appoint First Ever Indigenous Student Trustee

The first Indigenous Student Trustee in District School Board Ontario North East’s history was appointed late Tuesday.

DSB ONE announced yesterday that the Grade 12 Kirkland Lake District Composite School student Brianna Julien will be the first ever Indigenous student trustee.

Director of Education Lesleigh Dye says there were several students up for the role, and after getting some feedback from them, Julien was chosen.

Board Chair Bob Brush says having Miss Julien serving as their student trustee will bring another important voice into their decision-making process.

Julien meanwhile says she sees it as essential to have the Indigenous voice represented.

She also says she hopes to work to make schools safer and more inclusive and spread knowledge about Indigenous culture.

Julien will fill this role for the remainder of the 2017/2018 school year.
