The start of tax season is also the start of scam season.

Police services say a few different Canadian Revenue Agency scams are circulating the region. Communications Coordinator Kate Cantin with the Timmins Police Service says the first one is that you owe money to the CRA and if you don’t pay immediately, you could be arrested.

Cantin says both of these are scams. She says tax season can be stressful and the fraudsters feed off of that.

She says the CRA will send you registered mail and not contact you through e-mail, text messages or over the phone.

If you get one of these scams, you are encouraged to report it to police and the anti-fraud centre.
