Council Gathering Further Information Before Supporting Or Opposing Bill 160

Kapuskasing council will be gathering more information regarding Bill 160 before choosing to support or oppose.

A request from the city of Clarence-Rockland to support them in opposing Bill 160 was tabled by council members this week.

Bill 160, which was passed in early December, sees the implementation of a new pilot project called Fire Medics, cross-trained firefighters who can perform certain paramedic duties.

Mayor Alan Spacek says there are studies proving investments to paramedics will bring improvements, but no such data to support Fire Medics.

Spacek says the province claims to have no funds to improve paramedic services, yet they are 100 per cent funding the Fire Medic project.

Spacek says currently, paramedics are 50 per cent funded by the province, but there is no funding provided to municipalities for firefighters.
