Energy Minister Defends Party’s Decision To Not Regulate Gas Prices

The province’s Energy Minister is defending the Liberal government’s decision to shoot down a bill proposing the regulation of gas prices.

Liberal Sudbury MPP Glenn Thibeault says an Ontario Energy Board study is the reason why the party turned down the bill, stating gas price regulation would result in higher prices at the pump.

Thibeault says it’s his job to ensure reliable and affordable energy is supplied throughout the province, and through this decision, he and the Liberal party will continue to do so.

NDP Timmins-James Bay MPP Gilles Bisson put forward the private member’s bill in mid-December which would not pass its second reading at Queen’s Park.

Bisson says due to this decision Ontarians will continue to suffer with unreasonable price fluctuations between Northern townships.

Thibeault continues to point to the fact that the OEB’s report stated gas prices are currently lower than they were 10 years ago.

Therefore, he says any change to the current formula would hurt consumers all over Ontario.
