Northern MPP Demands Better Winter Road Maintenance

One northern MPP and another northern party leader have demanded improved winter road maintenance on Highway 11.

Timiskaming-Cochrane MPP John Vanthof says there are far too many deaths and serious incidents that take place each winter on northern highways.

During question period this week, Vanthof spoke about a fatal collision which took place last Friday involving a pair of transport trucks along a stretch of Highway 11, just south of Temagami.

Similarly, NOP Leader Trevor Holliday released a statement late Wednesday demanding the province put an end to contracting highway maintenance.

Holliday says citizens in the north should not have to feel like they are playing Russian roulette every time they are driving the highway for work, health or any reason for that matter.

Vanthof says changes have been made, but that stretch of Highway 11 is a tragic example of how far they have to go.

Vanthof says the citizens who live off of Highway 11 know these issues all too well, and they should be fed up with the lack of action from their government.

Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca responded at question period to Vanthof by saying the government does plan to take a look at that specific stretch of Highway 11.
