Northeastern Municipalities and health units have voted in favour of making their concerns heard regarding possible changes to health unit boundaries.
At a meeting this past Friday in Timmins, the Northeastern Ontario Municipal Association spoke out against the impending changes to health units, explaining that the new boundaries would create a super-board.
NEOMA’s sentiments echoed those of the Porcupine Health Unit, who have previously stated to the Minister of Health and Long Term Care Eric Hoskins that the recommendations risk weakening public health in the province.
The PHU Board of Health in a statement expressed its concerns saying there is no evidence justifying these changes and the regionalization of health units would only create more issues than solutions.
Timmins-James Bay NDP MPP Gilles Bisson says municipalities and health units have no want for an expanded region.
Bisson says municipalities play a major role in making health units worthwhile.
He says he hopes the government will choose to take a further look at the possible changes after the provincial election next June.
