NEOMA Members To Push Province For Land Tax Reform

NEOMA members agree the province is in need of land tax reform.

At a meeting Friday in Timmins the Northeastern Ontario Municipal Association heard from different heads of local municipalities regarding the need for land tax reform to bring municipal tax rates upward.

Iroquois Falls Mayor Micheal Shea, who brought the issue up Friday, spoke about the need for taxpayers to pay the same rate.

Shea says those living in unorganized townships still have access to CDSSAB services without contributing their taxes to them, which is something that creates a major problem.

He says a lot of larger homes in unorganized townships choose to live there full-time, but close enough to both sides, so that they will have the services available minus the taxes.

President of NEOMA Tony Antoniazzi spoke at the meeting and said that the main focus should be on getting the government to fix the issue, rather than creating issues between neighbours and communities.

A majority of members of NEOMA agreed at the conclusion of the meeting that the Ontario government needs to lead a land tax reform.
