NEOMA Express Concern With Offloading Of EMS To DSSABs

Emergency Medical Services are being offloaded to the Cochrane District Social Services Administration Board and Northern Ontario municipalities are expressing their concern.

During a meeting Friday in Timmins of the Northeastern Ontario Municipal Association, the subject was discussed at length, with many members agreeing that non-urgent patient transfers should not be funded by DSSAB’s.

Mayor of Iroquois Falls Micheal Shea spoke about how non-urgent care should be in the hands of the North East Local Health Integration Network.

Shea says Ontario is the only province that still sees ambulatory services attached to the DSSABs.

The same sentiment was echoed by Smooth Rock Falls Councillor Sue Perras, who says that DSSAB’s are meant to look after social issues, not health issues and therefore should be funded by the government.

In the end, a resolution was passed to urge the province to create more resources for non-urgent transfers in order to ensure that Northern health care services are equal to the rest of Ontario.
