FONOM is very pleased with the recent announcement of improved transportation services coming to Northeastern Ontario.
The Ontario Northland Transit Commission made the announcement to improve and enhance bus transportation this past Friday.
They also announced the implementation of the Community Transportation Grant Program stating return service will be in place five days a week between all communities served by ONTC or private carriers.
FONOM President Alan Spacek says they plan to hold the government accountable to ensure that bus services will, in fact, be improved and expanded when needed.
Spacek also says that many northern Ontarians rely on bus transportation for medical appointments, education, or visiting loved ones, and therefore the system must be reliable and accessible.
He also says the grant program will prove beneficial for those with limited mobility, seniors, people with disabilities, youth and those living on a low income.
However, Spacek says that FONOM is cautioning the government not to shift the responsibility of community-to-community transportation to local governments.
He says FONOM will continue to ensure the government creates a transportation network that is reliable.
