OFC To Urge Government For Support Regarding SAR Guide

The Ontario Forestry Coalition will ask the government for support regarding the SAR guide.

Municipal leaders, chambers of commerce, unions and forest professionals will meet at Queen’s Park tomorrow to urge the government to avoid rushing a species at risk policy.

The policy, or guide, will contain rules for species along with their effect on Ontario’s regional forestry operations.

FONOM President and Kapuskasing Mayor Alan Spacek says environmentalists are claiming Ontario has not acted to save the caribou.

Spacek disagrees and says that claim ignores over 20 years of hard work by the province.

He says over $11 million has been spent on government research tracking over 600 animals in that time period.

Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association President Wendy Landry says the attacks on forestry are concerning, especially when most come from those with nothing to lose.

President and CEO of the Ontario Forest Industries Association Jamie Lim says 57,000 jobs are at stake and misinformation can’t be allowed to get in the way of evidence-based policy decisions.

At this time there has been no definitive update on when the SAR guide will be finalized and released to the public.
