Fedeli SuggestS GTA-Area Companies Move Some Jobs North

Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli says industries that don’t depend on specific locations can help Northern Ontario grow its population.  Fedeli says an example is insurance companies in Toronto where employees simply enter data.  He says these owners can avoid the high cost of being in downtown Toronto and make life more affordable for their employees.   The MPP says they can get to work more quickly and not spend an hour each way getting to and from work.  He says they would earn the same pay as they do in the Toronto region and would likely be able to buy a home.  Fedeli says with homes in the GTA hitting the $1-million dollar mark, home ownership is becoming unreachable for many people.  He adds the rising cost of housing is also making renting more expensive.  These are factors that Fedeli says improves the quality of life for people.  Fedeli says the companies can maintain their head offices in Toronto but look north for the other positions.   He adds the savings could be very sizeable for the owners because they wouldn’t be paying as much anymore on expensive real estate.  Fedeli says the same rationale could apply to decentralizing government offices were some positions can relocate to the north.   During the 1990s when the NDP were the government a segment of the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines moved offices to a new building in Sudbury’s downtown.
