FONOM Disappointed With TransCanada Pipeline Cancellation

TransCanada’s decision to cancel a proposed Energy East pipeline project has disappointed the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities.

The proposed Energy East project included roughly 3,000 kilometres of existing pipeline to be divided in half to 1,500 kilometres of pipeline and was canceled on October 5th.

FONOM President and Kapuskasing Mayor Alan Spacek says this would have had significant socio-economic benefits within Northern Ontario.

Spacek spoke about the job creation and economic activity communities would have experienced and instead how municipalities will now feel a negative impact not only in the North but across Canada.

He says the country will be forced to continue oil imports from foreign countries that also have inexcusable human rights violations.

Spacek also says that environmentalists will say this is a victory, but in the end this is a serious detriment to the safety and security of our communities going forward.
