Sudbury By-Election Bribery Trial Begins

The Sudbury by-election bribery trial got underway Thursday with an allegation from the Federal Crown Prosecutor involving Glenn Thibeault.  Thibeault is the former federal New Democrat who jumped to the provincial Liberals to run in the 2015 by-election.  The Canadian Press says prosecutor David McKercher claims Thibeault wanted income replacement to cover the risk of giving up his federal seat.  In the past, Thibeault has always denied asking for anything to run for the Liberals.  The trial involves two high-profile Liberals allegedly bribing a former candidate with a job or appointment in return for not seeking the nomination.  Gerry Lougheed Junior of Sudbury and Pat Sorbara, the Premier’s former chief of staff, pleaded not guilty to the charges on Thursday.
