Detour Gold Pleads Guilty To Criminal Negligence From 2015 Incident

Detour Gold has pled guilty to criminal negligence in the death of an employee in 2015.

The incident which took place at Detour Gold’s Cochrane mine back in June of 2015 involved 52-year-old Denis Millette who died of acute cyanide poisoning.

The millwright had been working on a leak in the mine’s refinement facility when a valve containing sodium cyanide broke and the solution was inhaled by the 52-year-old.

The company was ordered by the court to pay a fine of $1.4 million as well as a 30 per cent surcharge to the family of Millette.

Detour Gold President and CEO Paul Martin said in a statement released this week that the company is very sorry for the pain this has caused the Millette family, and they will continue their efforts towards a safer workplace.

Currently, there are still 15 charges against Detour says the Ontario Ministry of Labour, as well as six charges against three different supervisors from Detour who are connected to the case.
