OPP Warns Drivers To Be Cautious Around School Buses

As the school year is underway the OPP are reminding you to keep an eye out for kids making their way to and from school.

Police are taking a moment to revisit some safety tips for the Kapuskasing and surrounding community when it comes to driving safe around school buses and children.

Officers are reminding drivers that you must be a minimum of 20 metres away when approaching a bus from behind and you must always stop when approaching a bus with its stop arm extended.

Drivers who fail to stop are subject to be charged a fine ranging from $400 to $2,000 and six demerit points off their license.

Police remind drivers these laws are in place to protect the children who are often at times easily distracted.

The OPP says parents should also take the time to educate their children to always be aware of their surroundings when on or near a school bus.
