MNRF Releases Bear Safety Fact Sheets Hoping To Help Avoid Encounters

As the summer nears its mid-point bears are starting to become more and more noticeable in Ontario forests.

That is according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry who released three fact sheets late Wednesday regarding bear wise tips to avoid encountering them.

The MNRF says they suggest tips for campers, with a few being; keep your campsite clean and odour free, hang your food high above ground, and keep children in between adults when walking in forest areas.

They also suggest tips simply for those who may encounter a bear outdoors as they are on a walk or hike, such as be alert of your surroundings and try not to wear strong fragrances.

They also suggest tips for cottage goers; bringing a whistle or air-horn as well as bear spray and to keep any of pets you bring well away from bears.

The MNRF says if you wish to report a bear problem you can contact them at 1-866 514-2327 or if an emergency please contact 911.
