The potential of finding life on Mars is starting in Northern Ontario.

The Ministry of Northern Development and Mines will be bringing two researchers working with the NASA Astrobiology Institute to Timmins next month to help with the mars rover development. Regional Resident Geologist Ed Van Hees says two California-based research scientists will be examining altered rocks in the region that contain talc, chlorite and carbonate comparable to what might be found on Mars. Van Hees says if the Mars2020 rover finds these minerals on Mars, it will indicate water on the planet and the possibility of life.

More information on the research will be discussed at Northern College during the “How Canada Rocks – The NASA Mars 2020 Rover Landing Site” presentation on August 10th.
