Town Councillors Support Request To Re-Instate Tax-Exemptions For Local Officials

Kapuskasing town officials feel they have earned their tax-exemption from the Federal government.

Town council approved the request from the Municipality of East Ferris to support a petition to re-instate the tax-exempt portion of remuneration paid to local officials.

Chair of Finance Dave Plourde says this year’s federal budget saw the removal of tax-exemptions for town officials.

Plourde says for the amount of work and money that is spent out of pocket by counsellors, this tax-exemption is a small amount to set aside.

He says Kapuskasing officials agree with the Municipality of East Ferris that the exemption is important for councillors in smaller communities.

Plourde also believes more northern municipalities will follow suit in supporting the request.
