Kapuskasing’s Role In Emergency Kashechewan Evacuations May Be Changing

Kapuskasing may not play the same role in the Kashechewan evacuations as it used too.

The federal and provincial Indigenous affairs ministers met on Friday in Kashechewan to sign a framework agreement in regards to the short, medium and long-term sustainability of the community.

The decision was made based upon Kashechewan Chief Leo Friday’s push for the government to make a commitment towards relocating the reserve.

What this means for Kapuskasing, a long time evacuation centre during flood season, is still unknown.

Manager of Evacuation Services Gerry Desmeules could not be reached for comment.

The official action plan of the government has not been divulged, but is expected to be made clear in the near future.
