Ontario Regional Chief Isadore Day calls the Sixties Scoop decision a precedent-setting landmark. A judge has sided with the plaintiffs in a $1.3 billion class-action lawsuit.
The ruling says the government breached its “duty of care” to the children. About 16,000 Indigenous children were taken from their families and placed with non-native families during the Sixties Scoop.
The lawsuit was first launched eight years ago.
