As Prime Minister Justin Trudeau embarks on a tour of meeting Canadians, there’s a strong message from Ontario’s Regional Chief. Isadore Day says part of Trudeau’s national tour has to include stops in First Nations facing social emergencies like high suicide rates. A federal report shows that suicides among First Nation young people aged 15 to 24 is five to seven times higher than suicides among non-natives. Day says this crisis needs to be addressed in the short term. Day adds once there’s a plan to deal with suicides, the next major issue is getting rid of Third World conditions that now exist on many reserves.
