OPP provide safe snowmobiling tips

Although we’ve had some pretty cold days, some are itching to use their snowmobiles on lakes.  OPP in some communities say make sure conditions are safe by checking ice thickness before heading out on a frozen lake.  Many snowmobile deaths are the result of sleds breaking through thin ice.  Once you fall into the icy water, you only have moments to get yourself out and dry before hypothermia sets in, potentially killing you.   Police also suggest travelling with someone and when riding at night, slow down because you can’t see as far.  On trails, stay on the right side and be careful at railway crossings.  Remember to tell family members where you’re headed and your expected return time.  Carry a safety kit with a whistle, compass, fire proof matches and some food in case you’re lost or became stranded.
