Local Police Expect Crime Levels to Go Up After the Holidays

On a month to month trend, criminal activity is down in the region. Officers from Hearst to Cochrane and Moosonee spent an additional 500 hours on the roads and noticed fewer offences. Staff Sargent Baldassare Nuccio with the James Bay Detachment says the decrease in criminal activity is thanks to proactive police enforcement measures.

Nuccio says he expects there to be a slight increase in criminal activity when the numbers come out for the month of December. Around the holiday season he says there’s usually more reports of property crimes, theft and even domestic occurrences. The Staff Sargent says after the holidays many families struggle with overwhelming debt which can put a heavy strain on relationships.

The OPP is also in the middle of their festive RIDE campaign which looks to reduce impaired driving across the province.
