New Pool in Kapuskasing Will be Complete by March of 2018

The new pool in Kapuskasing will be designed by the same company that built the one used at the Olympics this past summer.

Chair of the Fundraising Committee Gilbert Peters says people will be surprised by how fast everything goes into place. As soon as the ground thaws in the spring construction crews will start digging. The new aquatic facility will be attached to the Sports Palace on the same side as the Fire Department.

Peters says the old pool has passed its life expectancy and is costing the town more than it’s worth. He says right now the town is spending upwards of $90,000 a year heating the pool and also have to worry about maintenance costs on a building they don’t even own.

The fundraising campaign for the pool project kicked off yesterday and the town is looking for local sponsors. The total cost of the new aquatic facility will be about $8.5-million and Peters is hoping to raise $500,000 locally. He says they already have a million dollars in funding provided by the government with one condition. That condition is that all the construction is done by March of 2018.

Peters has no doubt the project will be completed before that deadline. He says they have a strong fundraising and construction committee that are working closely together on an approach that will work for everyone. Peters says after the holiday season they will ramp up the fundraising efforts to raise as much as possible.
