The OPP in the Northeast says winter tires are definitely worth it.
A key part of road safety is making sure your vehicle has proper traction in the winter. Police say the number one cause of collisions in snowy weather is speed, so it’s important to keep the weather conditions in mind while travelling and to slow down.
All season tires don’t work the same on snow, ice or pavement. The OPP says winter tires can reduce your stopping time by up to 40 per cent and they use a different type of rubber than all seasons, one that’s designed to stay soft in freezing temperatures.
Another thing police say to keep in mind is just because your vehicle has all-wheel drive doesn’t mean that you don’t need winter tires. The OPP says all-wheel drive helps you accelerate, not stop.
