Safe Winter Driving Tips

After a vehicle ended up in the ditch along Highway 11, police are reminding drivers to be careful out on the roads.

The OPP says it’s important to prepare your vehicle for winter driving. This includes giving your car a winter maintenance check up and another thing to consider is having an emergency survival kit with jumper cables, a first aid kit, blankets and a shovel.

Staff Seargent Baldassare Nuccio with the James Bay detachment says when the conditions aren’t the best, make sure friends and family know where you’re planning on going and when you’re expected to arrive. Nuccio says its important to increase your distance from other vehicles while driving and if you get stuck, getting out to push your car might not be the best idea. He talked about a resident who got out of their car to try and push it, but was hit by a passing vehicle.

Nuccio says locally there’s a tendency to have more collisions because people aren’t as careful in their own neighbourhoods. He adds sometimes road signs can be obstructed by snow so be mindful of stop signs and intersections and drive according to the conditions.
