Police Warning Residents of an Email Scam

The latest scam is making its way through Northern Ontario and police are reminding residents to be careful.

Staff Sargent Baldassare Nuccio with the James Bay Detachment says we’ve had several scams targeting local businesses recently and he’s advising members of the public to double check any emails or phone calls that might seem suspicious.

October is Cyber Safety Awareness Month and local police units want to prevent residents from falling victim to the latest scam. This time it’s an email scam that’s being used to commit identity theft and other crimes.

Nuccio says these scam artists usually pretend to be from a well-known organisation such as Hydro One, the CRA, banks or government agencies.

To avoid falling victim to these cyber scams, police say you should always protect your computer with an anti-virus, do not reply to emails that request any personal information and reach out to the organisation or company that’s asking for your information to verify the authenticity of the request.

The OPP says if you do fall victim to one of these scams to contact local police, Crime Stoppers or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Department directly.
