Draft Posting Of SAR Guide Delayed By Ministry Of Natural Resources And Forestry

The Species at Risk Guide has been delayed in its official draft posting.

The Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry Kathryn McGarry decided to make it official as of Thursday that they would delay the posting of the draft guide for 28 separate species to the Environmental Registry.

Forestry activities operate under the Crown Forest Sustainability Act or CFSA, which protects species at risk, however, the push to take a species first approach means protecting species no matter the economic or social consequences.

FONOM President and Kapuskasing Mayor Alan Spacek says together FONOM, NOMA, ROMA, the forest sector and Indigenous communities expressed their concerns with the Ministry for their failure for further consultation on the draft guide.

Spacek says FONOM looks forward to continuing to work with the MNRF to implement policies and legislation that can help both protect species who are at risk and also help to grow the economy.
